Looting in the Swamps

As I watched the po' folks looting stores in Mississippi and Louisiana, the minute they could walk the streets in the devastated areas, I was disheartened by their audacity, disgusted with their dishonesty and, yet, sympathetic with their plight.

These folks are having a Christmas party in the aftermath of a major disaster, and part of me can't blame them. They had little to begin with and now they have nothing. So what if they steal some clothes and pots and pans? And, besides, what good is a wide-screen TV without power?

Stealing is wrong and they should be punished, but their motive is poverty and desperation, for the most part. The smiling face of one black gal loading up her Walmart cart with clothing and baby items glowed with delight. How long has it been since she could afford to buy a new shirt? What deprivation has she experienced in her life that would drive her to commit this act of televised theivery?

Perhaps the big rich boys in the big white house should look at these po' folks and wonder how they can help them, not how they can punish them "to the fullest extent of the law."

After all, think about it - it's not like they don't steal - they steal from U.S. taxpayers all the time. It just isn't televised.
